Historic Massie was the quintessential Ontario rural hamlet.  It was well located in a fertile agricultural area at the crossroads of Concession 6 and Number 3 Sideroad where a mill pond could be constructed on the Big Head River.  What is amazing is how well the hamlet met the needs of the surrounding rural community.  There was a church, a school, a general store and post office, a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, a shoemaker, the Temperance Hall, the Orange Hall and the Athletic field as well as not one but three mills. (It is said that there were also two taverns but these did not last long.)  It is obvious that Massie was the focus of a vibrant rural community.  While a number of these institutions no longer exist, a strong sense of community survives and flourishes  in Massie.
